Response
The First Responders and Federal Agents that moved into the disaster zone worked long shifts in tough conditions, with no comforts of home. They rushed in to help victims at their lowest point with little thought to how they would get by in the days and weeks they were providing assistance.
In response to the needs of these brave individuals the people of the Gulf Coast area opened their hearts and their homes and sought out ways to make the first responder's lives a little easier.
The people of the Gulf Coast turned, as they have for decades gone by, to the warmth and community of sharing a quality hot meal.
Parking lots from Katy to Beaumont turned into outdoor kitchens as home kitchen cooks and professional chefs solicited donations and worked their craft under tarps on a blacktop. Feeding and visiting with anyone who needed a hot meal and a break was the norm. For three weeks the Greater Houston area was a festival of outdoor cooking, hard work, and piecing lives back together. The bonds cooked up in this stew of grief and comradeship will last a lifetime.
Hundreds of these stories can be found throughout the Region. The following film captures just two examples of everyday people doing extraordinary work in the middle of a crisis to cook up friendship.
